Account settings

How to sign up for Knoow.it

We’re in private beta. To Sign up you will need an invite. On the front page, press the request an invite button and enter your email. We will send your invite as soon as we can.

How to connect and remove your account with Facebook and twitter

You will need to go to your settings section and click on the Facebook or twitter section and choose to have the button on or off.

How can I manage my settings?

On the dashboard at the top you will see you username - if you hover over it you will get the drop-down menu which will include a section called, 'settings'. You can also do this by going on your profile page and on the profile section on the right-hand side there is a green button called “edit my profile”. Click on the green button and you will be taken to the settings section.

How to change your password and email address

On the dashboard at the top you will see you username - if you hover over it you will get the drop-down menu which will include a section called, 'settings'. There you can change your change your password and email address.

How to change your notifications preferences

You will need to go to your settings section and click on the “change email settings”. There you will be able to set your notification preferences.

How to report a Knoowit or an account breaching the terms of service

To report a Knoowit you will have the option to do so on the knoowit itself where you will find a 'report knoowit' button. Click on the 'report knoowit' button. Also if you would like to get in touch with us about any other breach, contact us on, report@knoow.it

How to remove your account from appearing on Google results

Go to your settings section and click on the search engine visibility, then choose to have the button on or off, as desired.

How to deactivate your account

Go to your settings section and click on 'delete account'. WARNING: Please note that once you have deleted your account all your records, data and content will be lost. Everything you've learned, collected, shared, created and developed will be wiped off your Knoowit memory.

Profile

How to change your username

Go to your settings section and choose the username section, change it and at the bottom of the page you will have to save the changes.

How to change your profile picture and information

Go to your settings section and browse to the profile picture section, change it and at the bottom of the page you will have to save the changes.

Profile header

If you go to settings you will be able to set a beautiful profile header. This is the image that rests behind your top profile section.

Profile background:

Go to settings and upload a background image for your profile, enabling you to personalise your knowledge profile in a beautiful way.

How to add location

Go to your settings section and browse to the 'location' section, add/change it and at the bottom of the page you will have to save the changes.

How to add your education

Go to your settings section and browse to the education section, add/change it and at the bottom of the page you will have to save the changes.

How to add work

Go to your settings section and scroll to the 'work' section, add/change it and at the bottom of the page you will have to save the changes.

How to find friends

To invite your friends or to find those who are already on Knoowit is easy. Go on your dashboard and hover over your username, a dropdown menu will appear with the option to invite and find friends. Click on either one. You will then be able to email friends with an invite and find friends via Facebook.

How to add a link to your website or other social profile

Go to your settings section and scroll to the 'website' section, add/change it and at the bottom of the page you will have to save the changes. A little world icon will appear on your profile - if you or anyone else clicks on it the website you have entered will open on a separate tab.

How to Knoowit?

You will be able to share your Knowledge via a Knoowit. A Knoowit is a Knowledge Post. It's the Knowledge stuff you share. Click on the blue :K+ button on the dashboard at the top of the page. There you will be given five choices (Add a link, upload an image, share text, upload a document or create a new collection).  Share accordingly.  If you need help, email us at help@knoow.it where one of our knowledge agents will be happy to help.

How use the Knoow.it button?

To install the Knoowit button you will need to add it to your bookmarks. Check out how to do this by going on the about pages "Knoowit button" section and follow the instructions, it’s pretty easy. And there is a video showing you how to do it too. :)

How to edit a Knoowit

You can edit a Knoowit by hovering over it and clicking on the edit button at the top. Clicking on it will take you to the 'edit' page - once you are done just press the save button and you are done.

How do I add my knoowit to a category?

Click on the edit button and click on add a category. Note that when posting a knoowit you will be asked to enter the category it falls under. For example, if the knoowit is about how to increase vitamins in your diet, select the "Food & Drink" category.  This will help others access the type of knowledge they seek.

# (hashtags)

The # (hashtag) feature enables you to tag your knoowit to a topic - this then can become a trending topic if others join the conversation. Just add the # symbol before a word or phrase. If a user clicks on the # (hashtag) they will then see all other Knoowits with this same tag - this enables a quick way to access topics, posts and knowledge in a focused, targeted way.

The best practice on using the # (hashtag) is to not to overuse it on knoowit. Make sure that your tag is clearly and simply identifying the content and topic of the post in the best way possible

@username and @me

@ (your username) is your username on the site. This is how others can communicate with you and vice-versa. When you post a knoowit you can add a @username to mention others who might be connected to that post. It can be used to suggest a post to a user to communicate with them. You can also use the @username to ask questions to others as they will receive your knoowit on their “@me” section.

Curating and organizing your knowledge collections

How to create a Collection

If you want to create a Collection, click on the blue “:K+” button on the dashboard at the top of the page. You will then be given an option to create a Collection. Click on Create a Collection. You will be able to name the Collection, pick a category for it and determine who can collaborate with you on it, if you wish to (an invite will be sent to the name of the user you enter). You can also create a Collection when you are posting a knoowit - the first drop-down menu will have a list of all your existing Collections, but if your scroll down you will see a 'create a new collection' section where you can add the name of the Collection and click on the create button to create a new Collection!

Private Collections

We understand that sometimes you just want to keep what you know to yourself.  Thus, we have create private collections that only you can access (and any other collaborators you wish to pick).  When you create a collection you can select its privacy settings. You can choose to make a public collection which can be seen by all or make it private which only you or those collaborating in that collection with you can see. You can change a collection’s privacy settings anytime by going to the "edit" button inside a collection and selecting it to become public or private. This enables you to create private collections where you will be able to organise your knowledge content. You can use a private collection to collaborate with others. You can also use private collections to keep the research or learning experience that you may deem to be a private part of your life.

How to organize and rearrange you Collections

Personalize your Collections! On your profile page in the profile section there is a green button with a box icon. If you click on that icon you will be able to rearrange your collections by simply dragging them around until you are happy with the result. Once you finished just click on the blue save button and you are all set!

Collection cover:

Each Knoowit inside a collection will have a small black and white square, which you can click on to set your collection cover. You can select any of the knoowits in the collection to become the cover.

If you click on the “edit” button inside a Collection you can add a description to your collection.

How to edit a Collection

When you are in a collection you can click on the "edit" button situated at the centre-top of the Collection to edit it the Collection.

How do I add my collection or knowledge post to a category?

Click on the "edit" button for each of them and choose to add the category. Note that when creating a collection you will be asked to enter a category it falls into.

How to add a collaborator to your collection

When you create a category or when you edit it you can go to the “who can knoowit” section and you will be able to determine who can collaborate with you, by adding their username (and invite will be sent to the name of the user you enter).

My notes

So you're watching an interesting video or reading something interesting and you need to jot down a few notes on what you've just read/seen...but there's no paper around, and opening a word processing document just for that would be cumbersome.  We've got you covered!  When you open any Knoowit in any of your own collections you find a “my notes” button. Click on the “My notes” button so that you can write notes about the post that you are knoowing. If you click on the view source and it takes you to the original website you will still be able to read an article and take notes as a top bar will be available to continue taking your notes. Once you click on the 'save' your notes will be saved and when you access them again they will be left at the place you left, enabling you to add more or edit if you wish.

Discovering knowledge

What is the stream?

The stream is where all the knowledge posts form all those you follow will appear in real time. It’s a great place to keep up-to-date, discover and learn more of the knowledge stuff you love.

How to follow

This is the way to get amazing Knowledge content to your stream. To follow a user you only need to click on the follow button. You can also follow a user’s specific collection. You can also unfollow by clicking on the unfollow button. Once you follow a user or their knowledge collection all content the post will appear on your stream.

Who to know

This is a small but great section of nine recommended and featured Knowledge profiles per category. If you click on the profile image you will be taken to that profile and if it interests you then you can start to follow it too.

These are the top stories, profiles and Collections that are featured on the site. This is where we bring you the latest stories - the more you use the platform the more we will be able to recommend stories that are connected to your interests.

These are the featured Collections that are shown to inspire you - you can either follow them or create your own. The more you use the site the more we will be able to recommend Collections that are connected to your interests.

How to find friends

Re-Know, like and comment

How to Re-Know

When you find a Knoowit that you want to keep in your Knowledge Collection, you can hover over it and the Re-Know button will appear. You can click on the Re-Know button and add that knowledge post to one of your existing Collections (you can also create a new one).

How to comment

When you find a Knoowit that you want to comment on, you can hover over it and the comment button will appear. When you click on the comment button, a comment box will appear below the post and you will be able to comment on it. You can also comment on a post when you are viewing it via the “Knowledge Explorer”, in overlay mode.

How to like

When you find a Knoowit that you like, you can hover over it and the Like button will appear. You can click on the like button and you will be able to keep it in your like section and show the user who originally made the post that you liked it.

Knowledge Explorer

What is the “Knowledge Explorer”

This is a great tool to personalise your knowledge and educational experience on Knoow.it. The Knowledge Explorer will as we advance provide you with an array of useful information about the Knoowit (Knowledge post) you are viewing and will also recommend more Knoowits form that Collection, user, and the source of that Knoowit, as well as other recommended content valuable to you. It also allows you to see information about who commented, re-knowed and liked the Knoowit.
